WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE ?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an exhaust gas created by internal combustion
devices such as home furnaces and car engines. When properly vented, it
causes no health problems. However, a car warming up in an attached garage,
a furnace with old or faulty ductwork, or a clogged flue pipe may release
high concentrations of CO gas into your home.
Because it is odorless and colorless, CO gas is difficult to detect. The
symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning also may go unnoticed, often
resembling flu-like symptoms of fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea.
Repeated and lengthy exposure to CO gas can lead to neurological disorders,
brain damage, or even death. Here are some suggestions to help prevent the
buildup of CO gas in your home:
1. Have your household furnace and automobile exhaust system checked at the
beginning of each winter season.
2. Install a carbon monoxide detector in bedrooms and above fuel-burning
appliances such as stoves and furnaces.
3. When grilling, never cook outside an open window or in an attached
garage, even if the door is open.
4. Monitor your health. If anyone in your home appears to have the flu, but
the symptoms get better when outside of the home, contact your physician
immediately. Contact the fire department or local utility company to have
the house checked for CO gas, and do not go back into the house until they
have checked it out.
